How vehicle transport works in Italy
In Italy, vehicle transport works mainly in two ways:
Direct transport (express): a carrier picks up your vehicle and delivers it straight to the destination. Faster but more expensive.
Shared transport (groupage): your vehicle travels alongside others on a car transporter. More affordable but slower, as the carrier combines several deliveries on the same route.
With Priority Help Car you post your request and receive quotes for both types. Each carrier tells you whether it is direct or shared, the price and the estimated time.
Types of transport available
Open carrier: the most common and affordable method. Your vehicle travels uncovered on a car transporter. Suitable for most vehicles.
Enclosed carrier: the vehicle travels inside a closed trailer, protected from the weather. Recommended for high-value, classic or sports cars.
Individual flatbed: a platform that carries a single vehicle. Ideal for short distances or emergencies.
4x4 / off-road recovery: specialised vehicles for collecting cars from hard-to-reach places (countryside, mountains, unpaved tracks).
Documents needed
To transport a vehicle in Italy it helps to have:
- •Vehicle registration certificate
- •Technical data sheet or certificate of conformity
- •ID or passport of the owner (or a signed authorisation if someone else hands the car over)
- •Purchase contract if the vehicle was bought recently
A car without a valid roadworthiness test or insurance can still travel on a tow truck or car transporter, because it is not driven on the road. The carrier may ask for copies of these documents before collection.
Indicative prices
Indicative prices for transporting a car with carriers who already drive that route (car transporters or return trips):
- •Under 100 km: €100–250
- •100 to 300 km: €200–450
- •300 to 600 km: €300–700
- •600 to 1,200 km: €450–1,050
- •1,200 to 2,000 km: €700–1,400
- •Over 2,000 km: €1,050–2,100 (multi-car trucks often work out cheaper)
- •Example: Milan–Rome (about 575 km), with carriers who already drive the route: €250–450
On trips of 300 to 1,200 km the reference is €0.50–1.50 per kilometre. Large vans, caravans, motorhomes and heavy vehicles cost around 40% more; enclosed or express transport 30–50% more, while return routes are often 20–40% cheaper. A local, urgent or dedicated tow truck usually costs more than these ranges. We do not give figures for motorcycles: it depends too much on the bike and the type of transport.
